In between is a study of concealment as a form of communication. The word that names the feeling is painted in the opposite colour, a small contradiction that sets the logic of the whole canvas. The more carefully someone hides what they feel, the more visible the effort of hiding becomes. The figure stands inside a rough black frame, composed on the surface and unsettled beneath. Colour moves around the body in restless strokes, while a dense black mass sits at its centre. It marks the point where feeling arrives whatever strategy of distance is being used. The painting treats this with humour as much as tenderness. Indifference is staged for an audience who may be doing exactly the same, and each person is guarding the thing the other one is looking for.
