Mental Gymnastics, 120x100, Dante Luka Žanetić

Mental Gymnastics explores the experience of watching a familiar person become unfamiliar. The two heads are the same figure, yet slightly different: the right-hand head is sharply drawn and still recognisable, while on the left the likeness is almost gone, its eyes obscured by a band of brushwork. Above the right head hangs a small, perfect panel, an image of the person as they were once cherished. The acrobat swinging between the two stands for the mental effort of reinterpretation, of naming and renaming what does not need a name, and of ascribing meaning where none was meant.
