After more than a century of existence, the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb has welcomed a new chapter in its rich history. The historic building at Ilica 85, one of the key places of Croatian art education and artistic production, was ceremonially opened after a thorough renovation that lasted almost four years.
Architectural and Cultural Heritage
The ALU building, designed by Herman Bollé, is one of the most significant monuments of historicist architecture in Zagreb. Its renovation was a long-awaited and necessary step in preserving cultural heritage, as well as ensuring modern conditions for the work and development of future generations of artists.
The renovation project was financed as part of the "Competitiveness and Cohesion" Operational Program, with a total value of over 90 million kuna. Through the project, more than 5,000 m² of space was reconstructed, including halls, studios, cabinets, and administrative areas, while preserving the original spatial and design organization of the building.
Between Tradition and Modernity
The reconstruction is not only a construction endeavor but also a symbolic act – a confirmation of the importance of art education in contemporary society. Since its establishment in 1907, the Academy has produced generations of artists who have shaped the Croatian (and wider) cultural scene. The new infrastructure now provides teachers and students with higher quality working conditions, modern technical equipment, and access to spaces adapted to contemporary pedagogical and artistic practices.
The opening will be accompanied by the final annual exhibition of students titled "ALUvizije!", which remains open to the public until July 3, 2025.
The renovated building is also a strong message about the value of investing in education and culture – two often neglected but crucial foundations of every society that wants to build a sustainable and creative future.
Symbol of a New Era
The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the Government, the Ministry of Culture and Media, the University of Zagreb, and numerous professors and students of the Academy. The Rector of the University of Zagreb, Prof. Stjepan Lakušić, PhD, emphasized that this is a significant moment not only for ALU but also for the entire academic community.
In the context of broader social and cultural development, the completion of the renovation of the Academy of Fine Arts serves as a clear reminder: art is not a luxury, but a necessity. And the spaces where art is created – like this renovated building – should be treated with the dignity that reflects their value.
